Les origines de la pyrotechnie restent bien mystérieuses. C’est Marco Polo qui aurait importé en Europe les premiers mélanges détonants de charbon de bois, de soufre et de salpêtre.
Mais en France il faudra attendre 1612 pour que soit tiré à Paris le premier grand feu d’artifice à l’occasion du mariage de Louis XIII et d’Anne d’Autriche.
A l’époque les artificiers étaient entourés d’architectes, de peintres et de charpentiers, puisque le feu était avant tout une succession d’illuminations.
Au XVIIIème siècle, Louis XV crée la charge d’Artificier du Roi qui se transmet de père en fils. Il charge notamment les frères Ruggieri d'organiser les divertissements destinés à son « bon peuple ».
Jusque-là exclusivement or et argent, il faudra attendre le XIXème siècle pour que l’art pyrotechnique prenne des couleurs, quittant le stade artisanal grâce aux progrès de la chimie.
