Masters de Feu 2016: the leading international pyrotechnicians in Compiègne

On 24 September 2016, the Hippodrome de Compiègne hosted the first edition of Masters de Feu, with three European pyrotechnic houses competing for the Silver Master. Parente Fireworks, Fire Event and Pirotecnia Caballer offered the public a landmark evening, under the sign of nature, emotion and musical precision.

Masters de Feu 2016: les grands artificiers internationaux à Compiègne

On 24 September 2016, Compiègne became one of Europe’s great stages for pyrotechnic art. For the first edition of Masters de Feu, three houses from Italy, Austria and Spain came together at the Hippodrome de Compiègne with a single goal: to win the Silver Master and captivate an audience invited, too, to make its voice heard. More than a succession of fireworks, the evening offered a true clash of styles, where technique, music, storytelling and emotion had to come together in the sky.

A first edition conceived as a contest of signatures

From its launch, the Masters de Feu format set out a clear ambition: to bring together top-tier pyrotechnicians in a spectacular setting, around a competition that was both readable and exacting. Each team had to create a pyromusical work, a show built entirely on the relationship between pyrotechnic effects and the soundtrack. The fireworks were therefore not fired simply to impress; they had to tell a story, breathe, accelerate, suspend time, then conclude with the power of a perfectly mastered finale.

For this inaugural edition, the imposed theme, “Draw me nature,” opened up a particularly rich creative field. It invited pyrotechnicians to translate the elements, the seasons, landscapes and living matter into light. How do you evoke wind without scenery? How do you suggest water with powder, metal and colour? How do you give an eruption the delicacy of a bloom? It is precisely in this tension between power and finesse that the talent of a great pyrotechnic house is revealed.

Parente Fireworks, Italian emotion as a universal language

Among the most anticipated competitors was Parente Fireworks, representing Italy. A historic house from Veneto, carrying a family tradition passed down through generations, Parente arrived in Compiègne with a firmly established international reputation. Its strength lies in a deep understanding of what fireworks can awaken in the spectator: not only wonder, but also the memory of a sensation, the trace of a moment that lingers after the sky has gone dark.

In Parente’s view, pyrotechnics is never reduced to a display of calibre or pace. It is conceived as a sensitive form of writing. Colours converse with heights, openings prepare breaks, bouquets seek not only scale but the right emotional impact. On a theme devoted to nature, this approach found a particular resonance: nature is not only spectacular, it is also fragile, changing, sometimes silent. A successful firework had to translate that diversity, from delicate tremors to monumental conflagration.

Fire Event, Austrian precision against the sky of Compiègne

Austria was represented by Fire Event, another house taking part in this European competition. In a pyromusical contest, the challenge for a team like Fire Event is to establish an identity in just a few minutes. The audience discovers a style of writing, a tempo, a way of occupying the aerial space. The opening sequences must create an expectation; the following ones must hold it, enrich it, then lead the narrative to a conclusion strong enough to remain in memory at voting time.

Central European pyrotechnic tradition often highlights executional rigour, the clarity of the tableaux, control of symmetry and the effectiveness of progressions. In Compiègne, these qualities found an ideal setting: the Hippodrome offers a broad reading of the sky and allows the audience to take in the compositions in their full scale. In such a configuration, every timing error is visible, but every success unfolds with remarkable clarity. Fire Event therefore had to combine power, visual cleanliness and a sense of narrative in order to defend its chances.

Pirotecnia Caballer, Spain’s great tradition in competition

The third contender, Pirotecnia Caballer, carried the colours of Spain, and more specifically the legacy of a country where pyrotechnics hold a major cultural place. In the European imagination, the Spanish school is inseparable from rhythmic power, driving sequences, the art of crescendo and a very particular science of sound, vibration and mass. This fire culture, deeply rooted especially in the Valencia region, gives Spanish shows an immediately recognisable intensity.

In Compiègne, however, Pirotecnia Caballer had to fit within the rules of an international pyromusical competition, where raw force is not enough. The theme of nature called for nuance, breathing room, and the ability to alternate brilliance with contemplation. That balance is where the difficulty lies: preserving the personality of a house known for its energy, while offering a work that is clear to both jury and audience as they assess the overall coherence of the show.

A jury, an audience and a founding evening

The first edition of Masters de Feu was not based solely on the presence of major pyrotechnic houses. It also had to establish a ritual: an evening where the audience does not merely watch, but compare, feel and choose. That year, the jury, chaired by Philippe Candeloro, brought an outside perspective, attentive to live performance, precision and the ability of a creation to stir a collective emotion.

This dual reading, by the jury and by the spectators, gives the competition a particular intensity. Specialists can appreciate the synchronisation, the quality of the products, the height of the effects, the sharpness of the transitions or the mastery of the finale. The audience, meanwhile, judges with the body as much as with the eyes: it remembers the shivers, the silences, the surprises, the harmony between music and image. When a firework succeeds, these two viewpoints often end up meeting.

Compiègne, a stage open to grand pyrotechnic emotions

The choice of the Hippodrome de Compiègne gave the event both a popular and a prestigious dimension. The site can welcome a large audience while offering the space required for large-scale pyrotechnic displays. For pyrotechnicians, this kind of venue is a rare opportunity: it allows for broad compositions, generous firing lines, horizontal tableaux and vertical ascents that structure a true international show.

The evening of 24 September 2016 thus laid the foundations of what Masters de Feu would become: a gathering where pyrotechnics are viewed as a stage art, with its authors, performers, constraints, boldness and verdict. History records that Parente Fireworks won this first edition, claiming the Silver Master as well as the Audience Award. Fire Event took second place, ahead of Pirotecnia Caballer. But beyond the rankings, this inaugural edition above all established a promise: to make Compiègne a place where the greatest pyrotechnicians come to write, every year, a few minutes of eternity in the sky.
